Multipronged approaches to pandemic prevention

The Molecular Medicine Seminar Series at the Hospital for Sick Children will be hosting Matthew Miller, director of the M.G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University. He is also an associate professor of biochemistry and biomedical sciences.

Miller’s expertise is primarily in the area of viral immunology, most notably vaccines and therapeutics designed to prevent pandemics, especially those caused by influenza viruses and coronaviruses. In this context, the Miller Laboratory studies diverse aspects of virus-host interactions. Current areas of focus include: influenza virus and the biology of broadly-neutralizing antibodies; regulation of humoral immunity; mortality trends during influenza virus pandemics; the cell biology and immunobiology of COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2; the influence of infection and inflammation on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS); and cancer immunotherapy.
